Both options will require involved (and costly) gunsmithing that will only be able to be completed by a gunsmith that is intimately familiar and experienced with Kalashnikovs. Personally, I would recommend against this project outright.
Have new locking lugs welded onto the factory gas block of your rifle. Buy an unmodified M70 gas block and have it installed onto your rifle. You only have two options for mounting a bayonet on your rifle. But as I said, Zastava does not do this for the reasons I mentioned before. Once these rifles have been imported, the bayonet lugs are then machined into final form by their colleagues in the USA. By doing this, the bayonet lug itself is there per se, however since it is not machined into final form, the rear of a bayonet cannot physically lock into the bayonet lug, thus also complying with the import restictions. That being said, Zastava probably has over 100,000 M70 gas blocks currently filling storage bins in their factory, so it would be a waste of time and money for them to produce new gas blocks specfically for USA-bound rifles, instead of using up the existing inventory of already-manufactured gas blocks.įor reference, other manufacturers such as Arsenal AD and Izhmash in the past have elected to produce new runs of gas blocks for their respective rifles that have the bayonet lug casted to the gas block, however un-machined. The Zastava factory in Serbia produces tens of thousands of individual parts for various rifles at one time, even though it will take many months for all of these parts to be used up in the production of complete rifles. The reason why Zastava does this is simple speed and cost. Zastava's solution to this is to take already-manufactured M70 gas blocks and simply machine off the locking lugs for the bayonet, thus complying with the import restrictions. These rules are also posted every time you submit a link or self post so don't say you didn't see them.ĭue to US government restrictions, ZPAP M70s cannot have a bayonet lug when they are imported into the USA.
